The Department offers B.Tech Degree program in Civil Engineering affiliated with APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. The Department maintains strong academic partnerships with various industries and training institutes, fostering the development of socially committed Engineers. Our goal is to facilitate the holistic growth of every student through academic guidance and by offering opportunities for career development.
Additionally, the Department offers internships for students in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), along with stipendiary allowances.
Furthermore, the Department has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NHAI, leveraging its expertise to enhance the quality of highway infrastructure. The current project focuses on the "Six Laning of Thuravoor to Paravoor section of new NH-66 in the state of Kerala on EPC Mode under Bharatmala Pariyojana".

The Civil Engineering Workshop is one of the oldest laboratories of the institution under the department of Civil Engineering. The laboratory has all required equipment and facilities for conducting practical courses in Civil Workshop. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS LABORATORY

Comprehensive Knowledge in Civil Engineering software play a pivotal role in shaping up the engineers competent to the present-day construction scenario. The Computer Applications Lab is fully air conditioned with 35 workstations having latest configurations, which satisfy the computing requirements for various laboratories and project work of students. Internet connectivity is provided for all the systems. The lab is enriched with licensed application software like AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, & Primavera for modeling, analysis & design of structures and construction management. The lab is effectively utilized for conducting FDPs, workshops etc. for the benefit of students and faculty members.
MATERIAL TESTING LAB I

The Material Testing Laboratory I provide facilities to test the mechanical properties of materials used in construction. The lab is actively used for research and consultancy activities as well. While designing any structure, one of the most important concerns of design engineer is to determine the strength of any material that has to be used in the construction of relevant structure. The material should be strong enough to carry load for which the subject structure is to be designed without undergoing undue deformations. In this lab the experiments are performed to measure the properties of the materials such as tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, impact strength, shear strength etc. This lab is used by students of Civil and Mechanical Engineering branch to conduct their regular experiments in the under graduate level.

The Civil Engineering Students’ Association (CIVISTA), constituted in 2013, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the professional and holistic development of civil engineering students through structured academic, technical, and extracurricular initiatives. The association fosters awareness and appreciation of various disciplines within Civil Engineering and allied fields by organizing workshops, seminars, conferences, and training programmes aligned with industry trends and societal needs.
CIVISTA aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, promote industry interaction, encourage innovation, and instil social responsibility among students. Every academic year, the association organizes technical talks, software training programmes, and academic enrichment activities conducted by eminent professionals and faculty members under its aegis.
Major Programmes and Activities of CIVISTA
Structural Engineering Club established on 10 February 2016 under CIVISTA, equips final- and pre-final-year students with industry-relevant skills through structural design projects, technical talks, and expert sessions. The club promotes real-world exposure through regular activities and industry–institute interaction programmes.
Mindspark is a curriculum enrichment initiative where final-year students mentor juniors by delivering lectures on innovative techniques and contemporary challenges in Civil Engineering. The programme encourages creative thinking and the adoption of efficient, modern practices in the construction industry.
Ruparekha is a community-oriented initiative that provides free assistance in preparing plans, submission drawings, and estimates for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low-Income Groups (LIG). The programme enables students to apply their technical skills for social welfare and community development.
Vidyanupalana supports academically deserving and financially needy students through the circulation of academic textbooks each semester. The initiative promotes equitable access to learning resources and academic excellence.
CIVISTA conducts social outreach programmes to instill social responsibility and civic awareness among students while addressing community needs through technical expertise and volunteer engagement.
The Civil Engineering Department Association launched its activities for the academic year 2024–2025 on 7 November 2024. The inaugural function was graced by Er. Siny Mathew, Deputy Chief Engineer, Cochin Port Authority, whose address offered valuable insights into port development and large-scale infrastructure projects.
A major milestone during the year was the grant of autonomous status by the UGC on 8 February 2025. Following this, the first batch of students was admitted under the autonomous system, and the first semester examinations were successfully conducted. All statutory bodies required for the effective functioning of the autonomous institution were duly constituted.
The department remained actively engaged in professional collaborations. Consultancy services were again provided to NATPAC for traffic studies related to the Sabari Rail Project. The ongoing MoU with NHAI continued, supporting the six-laning of the Thuravoor–Paravoor section of NH-66 under EPC mode.
Industry exposure was further strengthened through internships. During the academic year, 11 students completed internships with NHAI, while 8 students underwent internships with KSCSTE-NATPAC, receiving stipendiary allowances.
The 2021–2025 batch demonstrated strong academic performance. The seventh semester recorded a 100% pass, while the eighth semester achieved a 90% pass. 40.5% of students graduated with distinction. As per the latest data, 68.2% of graduated students were placed, and around 10% pursued higher studies in India and abroad.
The department takes pride in the accomplishments of its faculty. Dr. Shine George, Head of the Department, was appointed as the Autonomy Coordinator of the College, in recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to institutional development. Dr. Anoop C. K., Professor, continued his distinguished service as a Program Evaluator for ABET, NBA, and NAAC, significantly contributing to quality assurance and accreditation processes at national and international levels.
During 2024–2025, the department organized several academic and professional programmes, including technical talks, seminars, workshops, BIM orientation sessions, career guidance programmes, placement-oriented talks, and various orientation programmes. These initiatives enriched student learning and enhanced readiness for professional careers.
CIVISTA, the Civil Engineering Department Association, began its academic year 2023–2024 with a grand inauguration on January 7, 2023, graced by Dr. Elson John, Principal Scientist and Head of the Traffic Engineering & Safety Division at KSCSTE-NATPAC. Dr. John emphasized the significant role of civil engineers in shaping modern infrastructure and encouraged students to actively participate in the association's activities.
The department also secured consultancy work with NATPAC for traffic studies associated with the Sabari Rail Project. Additionally, an MoU was signed with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to contribute expertise towards the Six-Laning of the Thuravoor-Paravoor section of NH-66 under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
In terms of industry exposure, 16 students completed internships with NHAI, and 29 students undertook internships with NATPAC, many of them receiving stipends.

Throughout the year, the department hosted various workshops and seminars to enhance learning. The department conducted numerous programs to enhance student learning and industry exposure. Highlights included a one-week workshop on “Total Station Surveying,” seminars on sustainability, interior design, and post-Covid employment opportunities, and technical sessions on QA/QC practices, BIM applications, and STAAD Pro analysis. A technical exhibition for higher secondary students was held on November 25–26, 2022, and the year concluded with an online BIM workshop on June 19, 2023, led by Mr. Viju Antony.
Faculty development remained a priority. Many faculty members attended FDPs such as “Recent Advances in Structural Engineering,” “Emerging Trends in Energy Efficient Building Construction,” and “Futuristic Research Scope in Civil Engineering.” These initiatives underscore the department's commitment to continuous professional growth and research-oriented learning.
The CIVISTA-21 association activities for the academic year 2022–2023 were inaugurated with a grand function in the Civil Engineering Department. The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Shine George, Head of the Department, who emphasized the association’s role in promoting technical competence and leadership skills among students. The event was formally inaugurated by Er. Wilson J. Kavalakkudiyil, Structural Integrity Engineer at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, who inspired students by highlighting the global opportunities in civil engineering and the importance of continuous skill development. Dr. K. K. Rajan, Principal, presided over the function, stressing the need for active participation in association activities to achieve holistic growth. Prof. Somy P. Mathew, Vice Principal, delivered the felicitation, appreciating the faculty and student efforts in successfully organizing association programs. The association organized several key initiatives aimed at technical skill development and community service. The Rooparekha initiative continued to serve Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low-Income Group (LIG) families in nearby panchayats by preparing plans, drawings, and cost estimates for residential buildings, under the guidance of Mr. Appu John. This project reflects the department’s social commitment and active community engagement.
